Research and Planning: Trailer, Poster and Magazine Completed

I watched my trailer again, and I felt that having the voice over come in on 'But what if it's a curse' didn't work too well. Therefore I have gotten rid of this and just had the voice over coming in at the end.

THIS IS MY FINISHED TRAILER!!

I had a few issues with the colour choices on the text. I have now switched these around a bit.

Evaluation Question 4

How Did You Use Media Technologies In The Construction And Research, Planning And Evaluation Stages?
Research And Planning (Blogger, Prezi, Excel, Powerpoint, Word, SlideShare, Prezi, Internet)
Blogger was used again this year to record the process I had made throughout the project. All the research and planning that was carried out went on my blog and I ended up being more experimental and independant regarding the number of posts I did and what I included on them. In addition, I was able to put my evaluation answers on here also.

This programme was used to create a presentation regarding who I wanted to class as my target audience. Alike last year the piece of software proved to be useful and it set my ideas out in a clear way. Prezi was quick to use also since I had already had experience using it and was aware of how to.

This was used to create my publication plan, which was another task that I had experience in because of last year. This consisted of me writing out all the tasks that needed to be completed this year regarding my trailer, poster and magazine and when I was planning on doing them.

I used this programme when it came to writing out the scripts, questionnaires, plans for filming etc. Skills within using Microsoft word had been gained throughout the last several years of my education since it's such a common piece of software which is easy to use.

The internet has been used throughout the whole of the research and planning stage of this project. From using imdb to find out the top horror films, to using youtube to find trailer and score influences, the internet has helped dramatically.

PowerPoint was used to create the pitch at the beginning of the project, which then resulted in using 'Slideshare' to upload it onto my blog. The pitch consisted of different initial ideas that I had regarding plot, location, sound etc.

As said above, Slideshare was used to put my 'pitch' onto my blog. Although I hadn't had experience with the software, I found it was very easy to use and to understand.

Construction ( SLR Camera's, Sony Camera's, Mini-DV Camcorders, iMovie, Garage Band, iShowU, Photoshop)

The SLR's were used again this year to take the pictures for my poster and magazine. Unlike last year, I had a lot of experience with these camera's and could therefore think more about the pictures I was taking and look at lighting and the focus more clearly. By doing this, the pictures ended up being better quality and looking more effective, fitting in with the horror genre more obviously.

The Mini DV camcorders were used to film the teaser trailers this year. These were easy enough to use and I was given my own tape to stick inside it. I also used a tripod for the majority of my trailer to make sure that my footage flowed well, allowing people watching to follow the narrative more easily.

I used these camera's in the first year for the same reason as this. These reasons consisted of taking pictures of locations, costumes, make up tests, quick video's for the location recce's etc. The camera's were easy to use and obtain my photo's from and the skills learnt from last year also helped me with this.

iMovie was a new piece of software that got introduced to me this year in Media. I used this programme to create my trailer, do all the editing, add sound, edit parts of the cinematography and also the mise-en-scene if need be. This got a little bit of time to get used to but once experimenting had occurred, it was quite simple and easy to understand.

Garageband was another programme that was new to me this year. I found this harder than iMovie to get used to. This was probably because I had to create the sound and it was difficult trying to get the effects I wanted to. The sound created in this programme was put towards the score in my teaser trailer to build the tension.

iShowU was used last year slightly to record some of the progression made during the year for example on the magazine and for the pod-casts. I used this programme for the same reason this year but it helped me greatly when doing my evaluations this year. This is because the evaluations this year consisted more on using technology more therefore I had to talk and show my answers instead of writing them.

Photoshop helped me create my poster and magazine this year and I did this in practically half the time as it took me last year. This is because of all the time I spent experimenting last year and because I use it in my other college lessons so I am more aware of what is expected now.

Evaluation Question 3

What Have You Learnt From Your Audience Feedback?

This question consisted of me looking at all the feedback I had been given throughout the last year and discussing what it was and how it helped me with the creation of my 3 products.

In the video I discussed :

* The Initial interviews - These helped me discover what people thought the typical codes and conventions were of a teaser trailer and help me see a little insight into what horror trailers consisted of.

The Questionnaires -  These were handed out to my class and focused more on the genre 'horror' and what they thought made a film/trailer successful. This allowed me to think more about what ideas I could come up with.

* Proposals - These consisted on 3 ideas that I put on my blog. I then discussed the mise-en-scene, editing, cinematography and sound that I would use. Getting feedback from this really helped my direction and decision of what example to take through to treatment.

* Name Ideas - I got my influence and direction for what name to call my teaser trailer by getting audience feedback on Facebook. I already had 5 ideas and by asking for peoples on using 'The Unseen' it let me make the decision of using that.

* Tagline Ideas - I had two strong ideas for the tagline for my film for me to use on the poster I was making. I made a questionnaire for my class for them to tick their favorite and 'Once Seen Never Forgotten' won by a mile which was my original favorite so I was very pleased.

* Magazine Name - After focusing on the trailer so much, I had struggled finding a starting point. I knew I wanted a short title for the magazine but I was stuck badly with what to use. I used Facebook and got given the idea 'Take 1' and loved it!! I then used this to come up with 'Quiet Please, Action' as the tagline.

* Teacher Feedback - This was unbelievably helpful throughout the whole design process! It helped me have a consistent second opinion and discuss ideas clearly, resulting in the best possible final product.

* Trailer Feedback - The feedback I received from the class was really supportive and boosted my confidence to a degree because it allowed me to see that they understood what the narrative was and that the decisions I had used were successful. Being told things to adjust/add regarding the sound, also helped dramatically. I also uploaded my link onto Facebook and got a lot of comments saying that they'd want to go and see the film which also made me feel like I had done a good job.

* Angela's Feedback - This influenced the montage that I included in my final trailer which helped the tension build.

* Poster and Magazine Feedback - This was given in class and consisted on members of my media group answering what they thought the narrative was, the strengths and the weaknesses. This allowed me to correct and improve on the points that they made

Evaluation Question 2

How Effective Is The Combination Of Your Main Product And Ancillary Tasks?

Within this video I discuss how well all three of the pieces work together and how you can tell that each are advertising the same film. I discuss things such as:

Representation of characters: For example Angela's hair is kept the same throughout all 3, and her costume is the same. Her white face is also existent throughout them all. Hannah also is presented in the same way, besides the fact that she looks more stressed and traumatized as the trailer goes on.

Good VS Bad: The clear contrast can be seen in all 3 products between the good and bad lead characters.

Colour And Lighting : The colour and lighting can easily be distinguished as being similar. For example you have the poster which is black around the outsides and therefore gives off that negative atmosphere. In addition to this, you have the trailer which is constantly using effects such as bleach bypass which gives the same effect. The magazine on the other hand, even though it doesn't have the darker colour coming through, the blue effect goes really well with the genre of my film. The colour for the font is also very similar on both my magazine and poster.

Location: The location from on my magazine is shown within my trailer.

Text: The text is the same on my poster and magazine. In addition on my trailer, the horror genre continues to shine through because it still has that serif style to it.

Research and Planning: Evaluation Planning

During the last couple of days I have been planning out my other 3 evaluations. I have taken pictures of them and have put them in this post because I haven't managed to do them as ishowu clips or voice recordings yet.

Evaluation Question 1

MAGAZINE

* I used inspiration from the above 'Total Film' magazine when it came to having writing promoting the magazine and the information found inside it.

* I took a colour influence from this magazine for the text although by doing research around horror films and audience feedback. I focused on making most of the text either black, white or red and Total Film focus' on red and white text in this example.

* The masthead is in the same position (at the top, filling the whole width) and is the largest text on the whole page to make it stand out and grab peoples attention.

* The title of the film is underneath the image on both. This makes it clear to the audience which film the title is representing.

* I have used the typical codes and conventions of a magazine such as a barcode, the price, a main image, the title of the magazine and tagline, the title of film and slugline, additional stories etc.

* I may have used the influence to have the writing going across the top but I've decided to use different colours. I feel as though having the 'Summer Blockbuster' in white makes it stand out more.

* I have been more simplistic with the way in which I have presented my masthead compared to the 'Total Film' magazine. I've focused more on the image manipulation rather than with the text so that the focus isn't shifted.

*Although I have copied the convention of having a slugline under the title of my film, I haven't used the same position and in addition mine isn't as large as the example shown. This is because I didn't want to draw the attention away from the title.

* I've used the convention of placing a bar code on the magazine cover but mine has been rotated to being portrait.

* Picture fills whole page but mine shows the two main characters instead of the one. This shows off my genre and narrative of film by doing so as apposed to if I would have just put a final girl image or an image of the villain.

* I have included a banner across the bottom to advertise the films inside. This isn't commonly used in film magazines, mainly music ones but I liked how it fitted in and the effect it gave my magazine last year.

* I've purposefully not made my magazine cover very busy. I wanted all the focus, as mentioned previously, to be on the picture because I feel that it represents the narrative of my trailer really well.

* I have done a lot of image manipulation using my own inspiration to portray the right atmosphere so that my genre can be seen and also some of the narrative. In addition, I haven't done a seperate background for my main image because I have taken the location and photography into more consideration this year.

POSTER

* I've used inspiration and used an image of Hannah's eye for the picture on the poster. I think having such a simple image works really well because it catches your attention really quickly.

* The title on both my poster and the example I have given is the largest font. This is because I've copied the stereotypical codes and conventions and took the knowledge I'd learnt last year that the title should stand out clearly.

* I've used the codes and conventions of a film poster also such as the steels tongs font at the bottom of the page which informs everyone of who's been involved with the production of the film.

* I've included the website name in the same position as the example, underneath the steel tongs font.

* You can tell from both posters what genre the film is that is being advertised by the overall making of the product.

* I have used more variety with the colours. This is because I have used the stereotypical ones that people would associate horror films with which are black, white and red. In addition, I have based the magazine around these colours also.

* I have used a different effect within the eye to tell the narrative better. I have put the villain into the victims eye to also make the poster look more effective and not as plain.

* The title of the film is in the same place but mine isn't as bold as the examples, but is larger so that the effect of the font can be seen more clearly.

* The steel tongs font isn't as detailed and isn't in the same layout.

* The website is bigger as the website being advertised on the example poster.

* I have included a tagline on my poster. This is usually one of the most common codes and conventions of film posters and I think it looks really effective and lets the audience see a little more insight into what your film is about.

* My poster is darker. I've added a black gradient around the edges to create a darker, horror-looking atmosphere to it to allow the audience see what kind of a film I'm trying to advertise.

* I've used a landscape layout for my poster as I think that it was more suitable since I wanted the audience to be able to see the villain within the eye clearly and I don't think this would be as clear if it was a portrait portray alike the example.

* I haven't added any of the actors' names onto my poster. I didn't want much writing on it alike my magazine so that the audience didn't get distracted.

TRAILER

* I have included a MPAA message at the beginning of the film, to inform the audience.

* The production logo has been included in the trailer at the beginning, after the MPAA message to advertise the specific company.

* I have used subtitles like most horror trailers to create suspense and get the tension building throughout.

* The dark lighting and eerie sound which builds up as the trailer goes along also immediately signifies that a horror film is being advertised.

* I've used a montage of different images at the end where everything gets really fast paced to draw the audience in. In addition. I've used Todorov's theory including peaks, equilibriums and including bits of the narrative.

* I've got the classic villain and victim idea being shown.

* Fast editing has been used to build the pace which also shows the genre more clearly.

* Although I have included both the production and distribution logo, they aren't shown straight after one another as expected. Mine has dialogue between which helps tell the story.

* I have included the release at the end of the trailer but I haven't been as specific as the example I've used. I think that with my trailer 'Coming Soon' is more effective because its short and quick.

* In the horror trailer example, there were short pieces of footage which consisted of high key lighting to represent the change in atmosphere. I have done this but I have still made the lighter scenes have either the 'day to night' effect or 'bleach bypass' effect to make them look more spooky.

* I have used both a voice over and subtitles which isn't very common in most horror trailers, but I feel it works well in mine as it builds the tension up.

* Usually you'd find the looking on the internet scene, in more psychological, paranormal horror film but I feel that it works in mine because it lets the audience no how unaware and shows the victims vulnerability.

* The sound gradually builds up and starts to have more impact, but it isn't as advanced as other trailers.

* The mise-en-scene consists of some common and uncommon locations for example the woodland/forrest area is something you'd expect, where as the surgical room isn't commonly found in a lot of horror trailers that I have looked at. This links in with the story line.

* I have realized throughout the year that my trailer is a lot like 'Julia's Eyes' and 'The Eye' but I've developed the idea so that it targets people of a younger age because of the lead actress in it.

* In horror trailers, there's always the key hero where as in mine, the girl seems too vulnerable to be able to tell if she survives or not at the end of the film.

* Challenge is a tough one for my trailer because I have used my research sensibly and almost taken influences from lots of different trailers and put them all as one.
